Middle School testing will continue this week. Please support our students by ensuring they get at least 8 hours of sleep and come to school on time in the morning.
Go Tigers!
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Beginning March 25th, 2024, White River Middle School will be a cell phone-free zone. This will be a permanent change.
Why:
WRMS is dedicated to the learning environment and well-being of our students. The decision has been made to support our students' learning opportunities and interpersonal relationships. Additionally, this decision is being made due to the distraction and disruption of social media use by our students. While this activity often happens outside of school, it has a real impact on the mental health, well-being, and learning of our students while they are in school.
WRMS understands that this change may cause an inconvenience to some families, however our first commitment is to our students, their education, and the school learning environment. Cell phones are having a consistently negative impact in these areas and a change must be made.
How:
Students are encouraged to leave their cell phones at home, however if a parent or guardian wishes for their child to have a cell phone during the school day the following protocol will be used:
When a student enters the building, they will check their phone in at the WRMS main office.
The cell phone will be locked away in a secure location for the duration of the day.
Students will pick up their cell phones from the office at the end of the day.
A student found to be in violation of this policy will have their phone confiscated. A parent/guardian will be required to pick up the cell phone. The cell phone will not be allowed back into the building under any circumstances for the duration of the quarter.
Closing Thoughts:
In the following weeks, we will be posting links to helpful websites, videos, and discussions that provide expert insight and advice on the topic of the effects of cell phone usage on our youth.
We would encourage all parents to have a discussion with their child about proper cell phone use, screen time, social media behavior, and cyberbullying. In addition, we would kindly request for you all to monitor your child's online activity and encourage them to use their cell phones responsibly at the appropriate times.
If you need to contact your child during the school day call the WRMS main office at 605-259-3135.

Dear 8th Grade Parent(s) or Guardian(s):
White River Middle School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on March 6th,2024. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents/guardians, policymakers, and the public.
Your child will take a mathematics or reading assessment. The assessment takes about 120 minutes for most students, which includes transition time and directions.
The information collected is used for statistical purposes only.
· Your child’s grades will not be affected.
· Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question.
· While the assessment is voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policymakers improve education. However, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify me in writing by March 6th, 2024.
There is no need to study in preparation for NAEP, but please encourage your child to do their best. Contact White River Middle School’s main office if you have any questions.
We are excited that our school is participating in NAEP. We know that WRMS’s students will show what our nation’s students know and can do.
Sincerely,
Logan Tucker
White River Middle School Principal
